Know Your Environment Plus Your Personal Style

By Dr. Mary Lippitt, Enterprise Management LTD

Leadership style and characteristics address how leaders guide, motivate, and communicate with others. But an effective style requires situational awareness, wise judgment, and producing results.  Kurt Lewin recognized this dichotomy between personal and situational awareness in his 1936 book.  (Principles of Topological Psychology)

I think we've all seen leaders with an appealing style who are ineffective. Confidence, friendliness, or authenticity do not ensure outcomes.

Effective leadership requires both how you lead and which actions should take priority now.  A strong style must be supported by sound judgment, risk analysis, discernment and adaptation to change.  Data collection, analysis, judgment, and risk mitigation are increasingly critical as change accelerates.

A situational framework helps leaders separate critical issues from the “nice to have initiatives.”  Asking questions from six different organizational factors enables leaders to:

  • Identify the real issue instead of reacting only to symptoms.

  • Consider relevant facts rather than relying on assumptions or emotions.

  • Assess risks and resources, including time, money, and people.

  • Understand how others may be affected and consider their perspectives.

  • Choose an action that supports the team’s goals and explain the reasoning clearly.

Effective data collection is a critical leadership factor

Before acting, pause and ask: What has changed? What am I assuming? Whose input do I need? What could I be overlooking?

A consistent set of questions can reveal gaps that confidence and experience alone may miss. Situational awareness takes a willingness to ask, listen, and reconsider.
